MARTIN CARTAGENA | STILL AS EVER

Added on May 7, 2015 by Percy Broadway.

MARTIN CARTAGENA | STILL AS EVER

On view at PERCY May 14 - June 27, 2015
Opening reception May 14th 6:30-9:30 PM

Percy is pleased to present a new body of work from Brooklyn based photographer Martin Cartagena.

Following the tradition of well known street photographers including Bruce Davidson and Diane Arbus, Cartagena's photographs capture both the essence and the edges of city life. A prolific and driven documentarian, he sets out on foot each day to chronicle the bizarre and every day moments of New Yorkers in their environment. Cartagena shoots with reckless abandon, always candid and always on film, creating images that are strangely beautiful and poignant and sometimes uncomfortable. Cartagena possesses a unquestionable knack for hitting Cartier Bresson's Decisive Moment - a moment most of us might overlook. For Cartagena, no subject is off limits, and no moment too small. Still As Ever is a joyful and voyeuristic journey through the boroughs of New York, recording loners, lovers, subways, parks, and pigeons.

Pleas join us for the opening of Still As Ever, Thursday May 14th, 6:30- 9:30 PM at Percy.

SILVIA PRADA | GENERATION X

Added on March 23, 2015 by Percy Broadway.

April 3 - May 2, 2015

PERCY is pleased to present GENERATION X, an exhibition of works by New York based artist SilviaPrada. GENERATION X is Prada’s long awaited first show in the Bay Area. The exhibition features exceptional portraits of teen idols of the 80's and early 90's in Prada’s classic monochromatic nostalgia-meets pop art manifestos. Prada playfully chronicles cultural iconography with the ardent reverence of a teen fan mixed with the obsession to detail of an anthropologist and the refined hand of an expressive illustrator.

GENERATION X’s celebration of this golden age is a fantastical glimpse into our past and an early grappling with celebrity identity and popular culture. Long before the digital era, these fresh faces stared out at many an adolescent from youthful tabloid pages, and they were frenetically wallpapered in bedrooms, lockers, and other guerrilla canvases in the 80s before becoming full fledged icons up until present day. Prada’s documentation of such moments is articulate, nuanced, and obsessively perfect.

Joining this exhibition is Prada’s wife and frequent collaborator, the talented musician Kim Ann Foxman, who has exclusively created 50 GENERATION X mix-tapes with her band project partner Andrew Potter. The duo’s soundtrack for this era of innocence and teenage dreams together with Prada’s Xeroxed cassette covers,  make the tapes collectibles and are a true homage to the Xerox and Memorex years that preceded the turn of the century.

Prada stepped into the illustration and art scene in 2000 by contributing works to some of the most influential international magazines, such as The Face, Dazed & Confused, PIN-UP and V Magazine. Her works include large scale illustration as well as poster installations and have been exhibited in galleries and cultural institutions worldwide including MOCA Shanghai, MUSAC and Deitch Projects. Prada was born in Ponferrada, Spain, and lives and works in New York.

Prada’s 23 portraits are joined by an edition of unique GENERATION X objects as well as her previously produced books and zines. The portraits will also be featured in an exclusive collaboration of apparel with ONE- TSHIRT launching at 10 Corso Como in Milan this summer.

Join us to meet the artist at the exhibition opening on Friday April 3, 2015 from 6:30-9:30 pm. We are also excited to have Kim Ann Foxman DJ the event.

CHRIS FALLON | EACH OTHER

Added on October 11, 2014 by Percy Broadway.

On view at PERCY October 18 - November 22, 2014
Opening reception October 18th, 6-9pm
4124 Broadway Oakland, CA

Saturated lines and vivid colors belie the predominant use of watercolor in Chris Fallon’s depictions of amorphously gendered figures in various states of intimacy. Drawing inspiration from sources as disparate as Baroque sculpture, underground club culture, classical portraiture and the golden age of theatrical cartoons, the work on display inhabits a self-contained universe, at once alluring and garish, that challenges our expectations of human forms and their relation to one another.

Chris Fallon (b. 1976, Princeton, NJ) spent his formative years in Texas, Mexico, Massachusetts and New York. Now based in San Francisco, he has also run Partisan Gallery since its founding in 2008. Each Other is the artist’s first solo exhibition.

Come join us and meet the artist at our opening Saturday October 18th 6-9pm. For press inquiries, please email info@percyonbroadway.com.

PERCY OPENING | LUISA MATSUSHITA

Added on August 27, 2014 by Percy Broadway.

PERCY
GALLERY AND CONCEPT SHOP
SEPTEMBER 6, 2014 6-9PM

Opening on September 6 at 4124 Broadway in Oakland, Percy will function as both an exhibition space for artists and artisans as well as a retail space for short-run objects, books, and furniture.

Join us for our inaugural exhibition entitled ANIMAL, featuring new works by Luísa Matsushita from Brazil. Luísa is the well known musician Lovefoxxx, lead singer of beloved Brazilian band CSS which started in São Paulo 2003.

For this exhibit, Luísa has created three series of works. Her sumi ink paintings depict assemblages and unearthly landscapes of jaguars which are delicate, expressive yet graphic, showing off the artist's exquisite technique. Her collages are exuberant, with bold use of color and shape. The third series features black and white drawings with a vocabulary of symbols which nod to both new wave and the classics. Also on show is a collaboration between Luísa and local ceramicist Daren Wilson. Luísa currently lives in Hudson, New York.

Percy’s retail space includes exclusive works by local artists and PERCY's house line, as well as books by OTTO of New York. We are delighted to be joining Blue Bottle, Cafe Underwood, True Burger, and Premium Tattoo in a burgeoning block of young Oakland businesses.

Percy is pleased to invite you to meet the artist at our opening event Saturday September 6th, from 6 to 9 pm.
